Italy: February

No one’s descriptions of Milan did it any justice. Maybe it isn’t quite as quintessentially Italian as the rollings hills of Tuscany or the Venetian waterways, but it is so much more charming than people give it credit for. Whilst being a little less culturally rich than Rome (thank god), there is still plenty to do, see and - most importantly - eat.

We did the obligatory 2 hours sightseeing each morning, and walked everywhere we went, but bumping along a pavement overcrowded with busy Italians under dripping umbrellas grew tired pretty quickly. By the time we sat down for a late lunch with soaking wet feet and grumbling tummies, the afternoon tended to roll on into the evening pretty smoothly, with art gallery queues becoming less and less appealing by the minute. One thing that was well worth battling the elements was climbing to the top of the Duomo, but it make sure you buy your tickets BEFORE you queue for 45+ minutes….

One (of many) highlights of the trip was a night at LaFavia, a beautiful little boutique hotel. Set in a late 19th century building, LaFavia has only four exclusive rooms. Sadly the weather didn’t allow us to make the most of the large, leafy room terrace, but Fabio’s charm and a delicious breakfast more than made up for it. Plus everyone needs a comfy bed to rest their pizza stuffed tummies on… Rooms are simple yet stylish, inspired by Fabio and Marco’s travels through India, Bolivia, Mexico, Costa Rica and Europe, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. For anyone travelling to Milan in the near future - I couldn’t recommend it more.
